Swapping an old fuse box for a modern consumer unit

Rewireable fuses, a wooden backboard and no protection against electric shock. Here's what changes on a typical upgrade day.

New consumer unit fitted in a home

We still find old fuse boxes with wire fuses all over Bristol. They did their job for years, but they don't offer the protection against electric shock and fire that a modern consumer unit does.

On the day

  • We check the existing circuits before we start
  • The power is off for part of the day while the new unit goes in
  • Every circuit is tested before it's switched back on
  • You get a certificate, and your building control notification is handled for you

Testing sometimes shows faults that the old fuses were hiding. If so, we explain what we found and what it would cost to fix before doing anything extra.

Consumer units start from £600. See our consumer units page.
